Workin’ the Land

We are a few weeks later than we meant to be, but we finally got outside today to plant our veggies.

Here’s what it looked like before:

And after:

Grammy’s flowers

These cute flowers from Grammy are blooming in our yard today.

We got a little carried away with the seed purchasing this year.

We even bought a greenhouse for them to live in. Our baby seeds are happy. It won’t be long before those shelves are all filled up.

Here are some new things we are trying this year that we are very excited about:

Purple tomato.

Lime-flavored basil.

Brussels sprouts. It might be too hot here, but maybe if we plant them early they will grow?

Freesia. Obviously not a vegetable but we may as well try… they were really cheap!

Things we usually grow, but are skipping this year:

Peppers (too slow)

Yellow squash (yuck)

Lettuce (slugs crawl on it)

We planted our tomato seeds 2 weeks ago and they are already growing. This one is a grape tomato! They are out on the back porch today getting a little sun. We can’t wait to make salsa and BLTs out of them.

We definitely won’t have room for all these plants in our garden, so we will be giving away lots of them to friends and neighbors.

Spring Break!

Since we’re both on a teaching break this week we are excited to be able to tackle a few little projects around the house. Today we worked on our front walk.

As soon as we started pulling weeds Thomas uncovered a snake. He was super brave about it, and he picked it up with his hands and moved it far away. It was not one of those little worm-snakes that we have found in the yard before. It had triangles on its back. It looked deadly for sure.

And here we are an hour later. We still need mulch – and looking at these pictures, we realize maybe we should get a new mailbox.

Here’s the other side before:

And after, ta-da!

Happy almost Spring!

Mystery Solved

Ever since Thomas installed a new mantel over the fireplace this summer, we have noticed thousands of little greenish-gray dots all over the top of it.  We didn’t know where they came from. Did we use bad paint on it or something? Do we have mold?

The dots wiped off with cleaning solution so we didn’t think too much of it. But they did keep reappearing.

This afternoon Thomas was checking in on his coleus plants, which live in glass jars on the mantel and aren’t doing too well.  He noticed this little green creature on of one of the plants:

And he figured it all out.  Basically this worm has been munching all the plants and pooping all over the fireplace for months.  What an industrious little guy.

More pictures of plants

A few weekends ago we did some gardening in the front yard, but never got around to posting pictures. Here they are!
The hydrangeas and holly bushes have been there for several years but just about everything else is new.

A few years ago Gina planted some ornamental cabbages along the front walk. You know, for fall, like a harvest-time kind of thing. She thought it looked cool but Thomas made fun of them! So she was pretty surprised when he picked these out at Lowe’s.

Gina’s favorite place in the house right now is the front porch. She brings her laptop out and does her lesson planning there. It will be so sad when it’s too cold to sit out here anymore.

Bye, summer.

Some backyard improvements

We took a little break from lesson planning last weekend to do some work outside. Here’s the end result: a new border to the right of the walkway. Hopefully those poor half-dead grasses will survive… we bought them several weeks ago but didn’t have time to plant them right away, so they just sat out in the blazing sun in their little plastic pots until they were extra crispy. Gina has killed lots of plants this way. We added a stepping stone. See?
